Are Spiders at Home Bothering You?

There are about 3000 named species in North America. These predators live almost everywhere. The most common types in people's homes are:

Black Widow Spiders

Shiny black with a red hourglass on the rounded abdomen, 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch in length. They construct a thick irregular shaped web. Their bite contains a neurotoxin that shuts down the respiratory system.

Brown Recluse Spiders

Two-tone brown with darker fiddle shape behind the head, 1 inch in length. Long narrow legs and a football-shaped abdomen with legs extended about the size of a quarter. They live the majority of their time hidden in secluded places. Bites can cause necrosis (deterioration of flesh).

Cellar Spiders

Also known as daddy long legs, up to 1 1/2 inches in length with their legs extended. They construct thick dirty webs that they continue to work on their entire lives. They prefer warehouses, garages and crawl spaces, in homes behind furniture or at the wall ceiling juncture.

Wolf Spiders

They vary greatly in size due to the numerous species. They all are furry with hair. They have dark markings on each side of the hard plate behind the head. They hunt for their food like a wolf, hence the name.

Yellow Sac Spiders

Yellow to yellowish-green, 1/8 to 5/8 inch in length. These spiders are a common biting spider more so that a brown recluse. They build silken sac structures around crown molding or the wall ceiling juncture.

House Spiders

They have a dirty white abdomen with a few dark spots. 3/16 to 5/16 inch in length. It is the most common spider indoors but creates no health risk with its bite.


Routine, thorough house cleaning is the best way to eliminate spiders. Reduce clutter in closets, garages, basement, and attics. Outdoors, keep firewood, building materials, and debris away from the foundation. Clean behind outdoor shutters. Install yellow light bulbs.
